Because Kafka was such an amazing book, two book clubbers recently read another Murakami book entitled "The Great Sheep Chase". It's clear that this book was written before the author really hit is stride. Although his writing was still good the flow, plot line and story resolution were far below the sophistication of Kafka. I personally still hold out hope that The Great Wind-Up Bird Chronicle by him is as good as advertised. But it was a bummer to try to read another piece by him on the heals of Kafka and be SO disappointed.
